Second Workshop of the Global Risk Modelling Alliance (GRMA) Programme in Nigeria

On April 25-26, 2024, key officials and subject matter experts gathered in Abuja for an in-country technical planning workshop aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s resilience to climate change impacts through improved risk analytics. Hosted by the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), the workshop sought to follow up on Nigeria’s request for model and data support under the Global Risk Modelling Alliance (GRMA) and develop a comprehensive work program for project implementation. One strategic project on national scale fluvial flood hazard modelling, and two operational projects on modelling for agricultural drought and flood risk to disabled and vulnerable communities have been defined.

The workshop aimed to achieve several critical outcomes, including:

· Identification of, and collaboration with relevant stakeholders, ongoing projects focused on risk information and technical capacities for risk assessment in Nigeria.
· Agreement on project scope and work packages, accompanied by a roadmap for core and supporting institutions to respond to Nigeria’s request for model and data support under the GRMA project.
· Enhanced understanding of Nigeria’s Climate and Disaster Risk Financing and Insurance (CDRFI) priorities to contextualise the risk analytics support.

The outcomes of this workshop represent a significant step forward in Nigeria’s efforts to increase its resilience to climate change impacts and underscore the country’s commitment to collaborative solutions. By leveraging GRMA support, Nigeria is poised to strengthen its capacity to manage climate risks and protect vulnerable communities.

We are extremely grateful to our host the NCCC for their hospitality and support in ensuring the workshop’s success and to our colleagues from the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) & Vulnerable Twenty Group (V20), Insurance Development Forum and Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
