Workshop of the Global Risk Modelling Alliance (GRMA) Programme in Nigeria
A Country Workshop took place in Abuja on November 9-10, 2023, bringing together a diverse group of local and international stakeholders. The event served as a forum for addressing gaps in climate and disaster risk models, local data, and Nigeria’s current capacities to enhance resilience.
The workshop aimed to involve key officials and subject matter experts from Nigeria in enhancing the country’s understanding of risks. Various hazards of interest were discussed, including floods, droughts, and epidemics, as well as their impacts on food security, livelihoods, infrastructure, and others. Nigeria’s request for GRMA support would potentially enable the development of a national climate and disaster risk assessment, as well as the continuous monitoring of (sub-) national strategies related to climate and disaster risk management, including measures for risk reduction and finance.
Further consultations in upcoming months will follow to support Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to improve disaster preparedness and response.
We are extremely grateful to our host the National Council on Climate Change for their hospitality and support in ensuring the workshop’s success and to our colleagues from the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) & Vulnerable Twenty Group (V20), Insurance Development Forum and Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
